NASA is planning to provide smart glasses to the astronauts on the International Space Station for their future outer space endeavors. The space agency has signed a contract with Osterhout Design Group (ODG) for the project. ODG will be designing smart glasses which can be used on Earth as well as outside our planet. In near future, the ISS astronauts will be using the wearable device for training purpose on Earth and as a hands-free display glasses in space. The aim of the project is to help the astronauts to carry out difficult works in space easily and more efficiently.
Currently the developers are testing the smart glasses, following which, the glasses will be provided to the astronauts for training purpose. Manager of New Business Development at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX., Sean Carter said “The amount of savings in training could be staggering. This could be a game changer for human space flight exploration.” According to the sources, NASA is also planning to promote the use of these smart glasses among astronauts boarding the Orion spacecraft that allows humans to land on asteroids and on Mars.
As per the reports, the smart glasses will run on Google’s Android Jelly bean software and ODG’s ReticleOS operating system. It will be equipped with military-grade technology and will have 3D stereoscopic displays, a powerful processor, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a couple of sensors for detecting user’s eye movement. NASA explained “The glasses will provide astronauts with the ability to overlay digital markers on images of equipment, in order to record progress made during repairs, or remind the space traveler not to remove certain pieces.”
