As a preview of the program of the Professional Conference of 3D Stereo MEDIA, we are delighted to announce the following presentation by
Robert Neuman from Walt Disney Animation Studios in Burbank, USA:
Non-linear stereo and Bent Ray rendering on Disney's "Moana"
To attempt harnessing the storytelling potential of 3D is to undertake a delicate balancing act between immersion and comfort. Robert Neuman - Stereo Department Leader at Walt Disney Animation Studios - will outline his creative approach toward stereo and the non-linear techniques that have allowed him to successfully walk this tightrope.
Robert Neuman will be discussing some of the tools that he developed for this purpose in the course of supervising on more than a dozen films at Disney. One of the more exciting of these is Bent Ray rendering, the subject of a patent on which he is an author. Bent Ray rendering has enabled the stereographer to have maximum flexibility in reaching his goals. This computer graphics (CG) rendering process, which allows rays of virtual light to trace curved paths through space on their way to the lens, allowed him to craft an amazing 3D experience on the studio's latest film, “Moana”.
Robert Neuman is the Stereoscopic Department Head for Walt Disney Animation Studios. He is currently supervising on their upcoming feature, “Moana”. Robert also pioneered the 3D process used for “The Lion King”, the latter resulting in a 3D Creative Arts Awards for Best Stereoscopic Conversion. He developed some incredible tools in the course of supervising on more than a dozen films at Disney. One of the more exciting of these is Bent Ray rendering, the subject of a patent on which he is an author.
