Two cameras side by side. Chaplin's cinematographer, Roland Totheroh, experimented with 3D. But without special glasses like we have now, you had to cross your eyes severely to see depth. He also tried cutting the two films together, essentially "flipping" the images so you didn't need glasses. But it didn't work well enough. You can see this on The Chaplin Collection: The Circus special features dvd (along with a woman at the 1928 premier who appears to be on a cell phone).
