Handheld 3D viewers were the virtual reality headsets of a century ago
Tourists in Prague are like acquainted with paper viewers with plastic lenses and black-and-white photos inside. Some have mildly risqué 3D scenes, others scenic shots.
These are fakes, new pictures done in an old style. But there was a tradition of 3D travel photos from exotic places across the world that were sold in sets and traded among collectors.
The Library of Congress in the US has four from Czechoslovakia in its extensive online collection of stereographs. Three are full size and one is just a thumbnail with a notation that the full-size one is only available for viewing in person — in Washington, D.C.
