Method 1: the single-camera slide technique
The cheapest way to shoot stereo 3D needs zero extra gear. Take one photo, shift the camera sideways about 6–6.5 cm (roughly the width of two fingers), and take a second photo of the exact same scene.
This only works for static subjects — a landscape, a building, a still-life. Anything that moves between the two shots will misalign and break the 3D effect.
Method 2: dual-lens and stereo rigs
For moving subjects, you need both images captured at the same instant. Dual-lens cameras like the Canon RF Dual Fisheye lens, or a synchronized twin-camera bar, solve this by exposing both frames simultaneously.
These rigs cost more, but they're the only reliable option for people, pets, sports or anything with motion in the frame.
Getting the spacing right
- Close subjects (under 1 m): reduce spacing to 3–4 cm to avoid an exaggerated, uncomfortable 'toy' effect
- Mid-distance subjects (1–5 m): the standard 6–6.5 cm human eye spacing works well
- Distant landscapes: widen spacing (called hyperstereo) up to 30–60 cm to bring out depth in scenery that would otherwise look flat
Framing and composition tips
Keep the horizon level across both frames — a tilt that's invisible in a single photo becomes a nauseating skew in stereo. Avoid strong foreground objects at the very edge of frame, since they can clip differently in each eye and break the illusion.
Foreground, midground and background layers read best in 3D. A single flat plane (like a wall) gives the brain nothing to triangulate.
Exporting for viewing
