The new S-Class is more than just the sum of breathtaking technical innovations. It is the embodiment of automotive excellence at Mercedes-Benz.
INTELLICENT NETWORKING
The new functions all rely on the existing sensor system, comprising a new stereo camera and multi-stage radar sensors. These act as the eyes and ears of the vehicle. With the new stereo multi-purpose camera (SMPC), stereo camera for short, and "6D Vision" technology, the visual range of the vehicle is greatly increased. The camera provides spatial perception of up to 50 metres in front of the vehicle and environment recognition of 500 metres. Vehicles driving ahead, oncoming and crossing traffic, pedestrians as well as a variety of traffic signs and road markings are detected and assigned a spatial classification. The data from short-range radar sensors positioned around the vehicle as well as from long-range radar sensors with medium-range detection capabilities provides information on the distance from detected objects. The information from the camera and radar system flow into a control unit where they are intelligently associated with one another. This so-called "sensor fusion" enables the synergetic cooperation of the vehicle's active and passive safety technology.
FORWARD-THINKING SYSTEMS
Here is a summary of the new assistance systems and those systems whose functionality has been notably enhanced: DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist and Stop&Go Pilot takes the burden off the driver when it comes to staying in lane and the system is now also able to partially autonomously follow vehicles in traffic jams. Thanks to the stereo camera, the Brake Assist system BAS PLUS with Cross-Traffic Assist is, for the first time, now able to detect crossing traffic and pedestrians, as well as boost the braking force applied by the driver. If the lane markings are broken lines, Active Lane Keeping Assist can detect when the adjacent lane is occupied, especially by oncoming traffic, and reduce the risk of the vehicle leaving its lane unintentionally by applying the brakes on one side. Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus allows the main-beam headlamps to be kept on permanently without dazzling other road users. With the aid of a thermal imaging camera, Night View Assist Plus can alert the driver to the potential danger of pedestrians or animals in unlit areas. ATTENTION ASSIST can now warn the driver of inattentiveness and drowsiness over an extended speed range.
