Overview
Based on real events, the film follows several expedition teams caught in a catastrophic blizzard near the summit of Mount Everest in 1996, dramatizing the survival efforts that followed one of the deadliest days in the mountain's climbing history.
Native Stereoscopic Technique
Much of Everest was captured with native stereo rigs on location in the Alps and at Cinecittà Studios, a notably difficult environment for stereo camera operation given extreme cold, altitude and weather, with some sequences supplemented by conversion where native capture wasn't feasible.
Because Everest was captured with a genuine dual-camera or beam-splitter rig rather than converted from 2D footage after the fact, its sense of depth is derived from real parallax recorded on set — the same principle behind human binocular vision, where two slightly offset viewpoints are reconciled by the brain into a single three-dimensional image. The Native stereo (majority) setup used here reflects the state of stereoscopic camera engineering available at the time of production, a factor that shaped everything from shot length to how close the camera could get to the action.
