Overview
The film documents the construction and daily life aboard the International Space Station, using footage shot by astronaut crews in orbit alongside Earth-based IMAX 3D photography of the launch and training process.
Native Stereoscopic Technique
Specially adapted lightweight IMAX 3D cameras were flown to the ISS and operated by astronauts themselves, a logistical feat given the size and complexity of standard IMAX camera equipment, making this one of the first native stereo shoots conducted in orbit.
Because Space Station 3D was captured with a genuine dual-camera or beam-splitter rig rather than converted from 2D footage after the fact, its sense of depth is derived from real parallax recorded on set — the same principle behind human binocular vision, where two slightly offset viewpoints are reconciled by the brain into a single three-dimensional image. The IMAX 3D Camera setup used here reflects the state of stereoscopic camera engineering available at the time of production, a factor that shaped everything from shot length to how close the camera could get to the action.
Legacy & Reception
It remains a landmark in giant-screen documentary filmmaking, demonstrating that native 3D capture was possible even in the most extreme production environment imaginable.
